Porsche revealed that it is development a new gasoline-electric hybrid engine with Volkswagen. The hybrid is expected to cut the mediocre fuel consumption of Porsche's Cayenne pepper sport-utility vehicle by nearly a third when it goes on sale at the end of the decade, The Wall Street Journal reported. Rising regulatory pressure and consumer interest in more fuel-efficient vehicles is driving the project. "We're conscious that the social acceptance of a Porsche is a very important thing," said a company spokesman. "If everyone knows you're driving a car that contributes to climate change, it will be an issue." Under European testing protocols, the hybrid Cayenne would consume close to 8.9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, compared with 12.9 liters for a conventional Cayenne, the company says. Under U.S. protocols, the prototype gets about 24.4 miles per gallon, compared with 17.9 mpg for a conventional Cayenne. The company said it expects the vehicle's efficiency to be better when the final version is complete.
